I know from experience that finding good co-op games can be a real hassle, it can be time consuming and it can be confusing. I spent many hours finding games that me and my girlfriend can play together, We mostly been searching for local co-op games because that’s what we like to play, games that can be played on one screen. This list will go though some of the best games we have found on Steam that’s fun to play together, and of course you don’t have to play these games with your girlfriend, it can be anyone, your mom, your friend, your cat, anyone.
I’ll start of with a beautiful platformer game, Guacamelee!. What first drew us to this game was the stunning design, you play as a Mexican wrestler that got to jump, climb and run your way through a number of stages. We played the game with one controllers plugged into our PC and one on the keyboard, we just took one of our PS3 controllers and that worked great, the keyboard on the other hand was painful, this game was not meant to be played with a keyboard, and my fingers felt that. The game is fun, it looks good and it works great as a co-op game, also a big bonus is that it’s cheap 🙂
Next up we have a side scrolling action hack n’ slash game called Castle Crashers, one of my favorite games to play with my girlfriend. You quickly notice that Castle Crashers is a game meant to be played together with friends. It’s really a simple game with a repetitive combat with a splash of silly humor, and playing the game alone isn’t much fun if you ask me, but when played toghter with someone the game is brilliant. Fast combat with some co-op elements that demands that you work together. The controls are a big plus for me, they’re easy to learn and that means you can play this game even with people that are new to video games.
Also this game we played with one controller and one on the keyboard, the keyboard worked OK but it’s clearly better to play it with a controller.
Another fanastic local co-op platformer game is up, works best with two controllers of course but I found the keyboard to be OK also. Rayman is a long runner in the gaming world and the team behind it have produced countless of fantastic games in the series. The gameplay is your standard platform setup, you need to jump, punch and run through countless of beautiful stages. The variety of stages is great, with air and water stages, and time trials and other kinds of challenges. The game works great as a co-op game though there’s not that much of teamwork needed, but sometimes you need to work together and that’s when this game really shines in my eyes. It’s pretty much a solid game with a lot of things to do in, the design of the game is also wonderfully cartoonish and beautiful. Well worth it’s money and one of the best co-op games I played with my girlfriend.
If you like this game you can also check out the precursor to Rayman Legends, Rayman Origins, a fantastic game that’s almost as good as Legends, it also has co-op and only cost a few dollars, worth every penny.
METAL SLUG 3
Next up is a Steam game with local co-op we haven’t had much time to play yet so I can’t say that much about it, but I heard some pretty great things about this game so I’m including it anyway, Metal Slug 3 is a run and gun 2D action game where you move sideways defeating countless of enemies with your guns, the look and feel of the game is a retro arcade style, like I said before I haven’t played it much yet so not much I can say yet. It’s cheap and it’s probably hell of a fun to play in co-op, so check it out!
