Steam Community market is still just in beta but it’s still very much fully functioning and alive, with transactions happening all the time, with items from a variety of games. Steam Community market is pretty much a buy and sell market for the gamers of Steam, where you can sell and buy in-game items from a few of the games on Steam (Dota 2 & TF2 for example) The number of items that are getting “marketable” and being able to put on the market to sell is increasing all the time, the latest addition is the Steam Trading Cards that you now can buy from other users on the Market.
Just a quick heads up before I start, this is not a guide on how to get rich on the community market, it’s just a simple guide on how to earn some money on the community market, nothing fancy, just a few dollars here and there, this guide is still very limited but I’m planing on expanding it as soon as Steam adds more features and options to the community market.
What can you sell on the Steam community market?
In order to earn money we need to sell something, so what do you got that you can sell? Head over to your inventory and check out what items you got. At the moment you can only sell items from Dota 2, Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: GO. In both TF2 and Dota 2 you are very limited on what items you can sell and you can’t, basically you can sell crates/chests and rare and unusual items from both games. And on CS:GO there’s basically no items you can sell at the moment.
So how to get items from Dota 2 and TF2?
In order to get items from TF2 you need to have TF2 premium, otherwise you won’t get items that you can sell on the market, so the free version won’t help. If you have TF2 premium all you have to do is play the game in order to get items, or if you don’t want to play you can always just idle (basically going afk and still getting items) you can find our guide on how to idle in TF2 over here, Foxygamer – TF2 Idling guide. This way you can get 5-10 items each week. Like I said before, it’s nothing that will get you rich, you will get crates that you can sell, and you can always hope for a rare item you can sell.
When it comes to Dota 2 all you need to do is install the game and start playing it (it’s free) when you level up your rank in Dota 2 you get rewarded with items, you can also get rewarded with items when just playing the game. It’s not a good idea to idle in Dota 2, it won’t work and will get you kicked. You will get chests and other items that you can put for sale on the market.
Selling Steam Trading Cards
Steam Trading Cards is a system that is still in beta, but you can enter the beta by joining the official group, found here, also more info there. The Trading Cards are being sold for 0,30€-0,60€ each, and you obtain these cards by playing games that have trading cards, there’s more and more games each week that joins the Trading Cards Beta, you can find a full and update list of all the games over here
You can only get around 5 trading cards for each game you have, so it’s very limited. And for free-to-play games like Dota 2 and TF2 it’s even more limited, you can only get trading cards if you purchased anything in the games in-game store for real money, you can find more info about that in the official Steam Trading Cards Group. But if you own a bunch of game that are participating in the Trading Card beta you can easily get a bunch of cards to sell just by playing the games.

Investing in items on the market
Investing is always risky and you’ll never know if you’ll be winning or losing money. In order to invest you really need to know the market and understand it. Keep in mind that this is just speculations and a example of something that might be something worth investing in, One possible investment would be the trading cards, right now many are just selling their cards or crafting badges with them, trading cards are being consumed pretty fast because people think this is a new a cool feature. But the trading cards are limited, people can only get 5 cards/game and then that’s it, the only exception are the free to play games (Dota 2, TF2) where you can increase the number of card you can get by buying in-game items, but you need to spend a lot of cash in order to get a new trading card.
So if nothing change with the current system the Trading Cards will run out because all the cards are getting used for crafting. Here comes the investment possibility, right now the trading cards are cheap, you can get a TF2 card for 0,30€ for example, buy a bunch of these cheap cards and wait for the price to get higher, this of course is extremely risky because we don’t know what kind of plans Valve have for the community market right now.
Investing can be done with any item on the Steam Market of course, what will you invest in? Or do you think it’s to risky?
Buying Cheap – Selling Expensive!
This is the oldest trick in the book, buying low and selling high, and it work just perfect on Steam Community market, if you know what you’re doing. What we’re doing with this method is pretty much taking advantage of the great popularity and accessibility the Steam Community market have. So where do you find items to buy? There’s plenty of sites and forums that are selling/buying/trading items, many of these sites have items that are much cheaper then the Community market. Here’s a quick list of sites where you can buy and sell Steam items.
Team Fortress 2 Trading
This is only a few of many many sites that is all about trading Steam items, the world of buying and selling can be confusing but it’s nothing you can’t learn, just be prepared to makes some mistakes in the beginning. The basics of this method is buying cheap items on sites like these above (or other) and then selling them with a profit on the Steam Community Market, just to be clear, not all Tradable items are Marketable, it’s two different things, just because you can trade a item doesn’t mean you can put it on the market, if it’s possible to market a item it’s displayed in the information on that specific Steam items.
