Playing together with people is always fun, playing together with friends and family online can be fun but it can’t be compare with the fun you have when playing games on the PS3 on splitscreen sitting beside each other, I don’t know why this is, but it’s probably the social interaction that makes it so much fun.
PS3 split screen games
As we all know Playstation have a lot of games, the PS3 has so many games it’s almost ridiculous. And finding games that you can play 2-players at once can be tricky to find, at least if you’re looking for a fun game, that’s why I made this list, to help others find games that have a two players option. I been in the same situation, trying to find game to play with my girlfriend, and we have found some fantastic co-op games, and we also found some pretty crappy ones too, those won’t be featured of course. I include a short review of each game and why I think it’s a good 2 player co-op game, a trailer for the game and a link to Amazon where you can get the games for a superb price (there’s also more reviews for the game on Amazon)
I hope you’ll enjoy this list and that you find at least one game that you like.
Resident Evil 5
2 player co-op Horror Survival
I’m starting off with the creepiest game of them all, a co-op survival horror game called Resident Evil 5, some of you might know about this game and movie series. In this game you’ll fight different kinds of zombies in the deepest of Africa, you’ll encounter bosses and hordes of zombies that wants to eat you.
The story isn’t my favorite part of the game and at times it can be really really bad, very stereotypic characters with very little depth. But I’m not playing Resident Evil for the story I’m playing it for the amazing and trilling gameplay, you can play the whole game in two player splitscreen, and the game is designed so that you must work together to succeed, it’s one of those rare games that are extremely fun to play together but isn’t that much fun playing by yourself, and that’s because it’s made for co-op.
Me and my girlfriend is easily scared and we don’t even like horror movies, but I wouldn’t call this a horror game, the game has some spooky monsters and the atmosphere in the game can get pretty nasty, and I would lie if I said we didn’t get scared playing this game, but my point is, don’t worry if you don’t like horror movies/games, it’s not that spooky, and it’s more of a zombie survival game then a horror game, for example you need to be careful and save the ammo you get, ammo and weapons are lying around here and there, but if you just go and waste all your ammo on some zombie you’ll run out of ammo pretty fast, it’s a nice feature that really makes the game a little bit more exciting.
Ratchet & Clank All-4-One
Co-op Platform game
Ratchet and Clank is another longer runner for the Playstation. In this platformer shooter game you can play up to 4 players at once, and this is yet another fine example for game designers actually making a game that’s suppose to be played by 2 or more players. You can play the whole game in co-op mode and you will get rewarded for working together, for example if you both are firing at the same enemy with the same kind of weapon you will do extra damage to that enemy, there’s also a variety of weapons you can use together, another example of a co-op tactic you can use is if one player uses a gun to freeze the enemies while the other player deals damage to the frozen enemies. There’s a few weapons you can unlock and you can also upgrade the weapons you like.
The game has a cartoonish and fun style and the story isn’t Oscar material but it’s a bit fun and short, just like the game itself, which comes to the negative part of the game, it’s a bit short and sometimes it can be a bit too easy, I wouldn’t full price for this game when it was new for this kind of length of a game. But it’s a few years from the release and the price has dropped since then, so for the price tag it has now it’s defiantly worth all the money.
Lord of the Rings: War in the North
1-3 player RPG coop action
Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a action RPG played in a 3rd person view with a story that takes place in the same world the Lord of the rings takes place in. But you won’t play the game as Bilbo or any of the characters from the movie, instead you will choose between one of three class that you can play. Each class is good at certain things, there’s the mage class that can heal and cast spells, then there’s the tanky class that can take a beating and do damage to many enemies, and the stealthy archery ranger class that’s good with a bow and can turn invisible.
You travel through the game to different places, where you do quests and kill enemies, it’s your standard RPG game with a level system, and when you level up you can get skills and choose what stats you want for your character, that plus the weapons and armor you find when opening chests and killing foes let’s you customize your character so you can play how you want to.
In my opinion this game suffers from the problems some of the other games on this lists have, the game is to short and I would wish it could be a few more hours long, there is a option when you complete the game to play the game again with the same story but on a higher difficult level. This adds some replay value but I still think it should have been a bit longer. Also the story isn’t the best in this game, but that’s just me, I love the Lord of the rings books and movies but this game doesn’t have that feeling, luckily for me you can skip all the story cinematic, so I’m happy!
It’s overall a good and fun RPG, perfect to play together, the combat is fun and action filled, the co-op makes the game a lot of fun, even though I might seem negative to this game in this little review I would recommend this game, we had a lot of fun with this game! (Thanks Playstation Plus!)
Uncharted 2 & 3
2 player Splitscreen Action
The Uncharted games are a personal favorite of mine, they’re the best games on the PS3 (my personal opinion of course) Uncharted 2 & 3 have great singleplayer campaign with a great story that feels a lot like a adventure action movie.
Sadly the main story of these games can’t be played as 2-player co-op, instead if you want to play 2 player splitscreen on Uncharted there’s a game mode for that. When playing co-op in Uncharted you can choose from a few game modes to play, you can either play against people online, still 2 player split screen but you and your co-player will face people in gun fights in arena style battles, (Team Deathmatch for example) or you can play co-op against waves of computer controlled enemies, that game mode is my personal favorite, you need to work together to kill each wave of enemies, and it get harder and harder for each wave. A lot of action and a lot of fun, it’s not much variation in this game mode but oddly enough that hasn’t stopped us from playing it countless of times.
Uncharted 3 has the best co-op from the two, it’s basically the same thing in both games, only that in Uncharted 3 everything is a bit more refined. Uncharted 3 multiplayer part is free to play with limitations, not sure if co-op is supported in the free version. If you want to check out the free version of the multiplayer part of Uncharted 3 you can find it on Playstation Store.
Little Big Planet 1 & 2
Fun co-op Platformer
The best platformer on the PS3, and I know a lot of people would agree on that. Little Big Planet is a creative game series with a unique and fun style. Little big planet is a 2 player co-op game where teamwork might not be the highest priority but it’s more like a game where you play alongside each other, there are few team work elements but they’re not many, for example in boss fights it’s always nice to be two or more, the lack of team work isn’t a big problem for me, I’m guessing that’s because the game is some much fun.
The campaign of the game has a good length, and when you’re done with it you can download hundreds of thousands player made stages and maps (with variety of quality) and play those instead. There’s also a easy to use map creator so you can make your own stages in the game.
2 player Platformer
Rayman Origins is yet another creative and beautiful platform game with a co-op option. I would call Rayman a classical platformer much like Super Mario. There’s the punch and jump button and that’s about it, it’s easy to play in the beginning but the stages gets harder and harder the longer you proceed into the game. The stages varies between different worlds and game modes making the game fresh and fun to play. The design of the game is hand drawn, beautifully and goofy looking. Perfect game if you want a game that you can just pick up any time and play for a few hours, no complex story or controllers, just a great and simple game.
Resistance: Fall of Man
2 player Splitscreen FPS
Time for a first person shooter, I may not know a lot about co-op first person shooter games, and I’m sure there’s plenty of other FPS games worthy on this list, but Resistance is one of the few FPS games I ever played in co-op. You can play the whole game in 2 player splitscreen which is just a great feature, I don’t understand why more FPS are adding that feature. The game takes place in the 1950s and the story of the game is that aliens have attacked the world and humans are fighting for their life and their planet, and you will play as one of the soldiers on the battlefield.
In Resistance: Fall of Man you can use a variety of guns, there’s some real looking guns from the 1950s but you will also be able to use the alien’s guns against them. It’s a great FPS game that requires team work in order to succeed. Recommended for both FPS veterans and players new to the genre.
