I got Playstation Plus in the beginning of this year, there were some special discount on PS plus that I wouldn’t resist, I now had my subscription for 5 months. I remember that I thought when I got the subscription that if I at least got two good games in my 1 year of subscription to PS plus then I have made my money back, and it would be worth it. Because that’s about how much Playstation Plus cost for a year, like two old Playstation 3 games or one new.
is Playstation plus worth it?
Here’s quick overview of what you get each month, every month there’s 3 new PS3 games that you can download and two new PS Vita games. If 3 new games are added to the download library then 3 games from the library will be removed, so it’s 3 in then it’s 3 out. There’s always around 10-12 games to download, and a few PS vita games.
As long as you download a game before it gets deleted from the PS plus game collection you can keep that game for as long as you have a active game subscription. So for example if you have a PS plus subscription for a month and you download a game, after your PS Plus time is gone you can’t play that game, but if you activate your subscription again you can play all the games that you ever downloaded from Playstation Plus.
The games on PS Plus
I will only talk about the PS3 games because I never downloaded a PS vita game. The games that you get varies in quality, some are great and some are terrible, but they’re always something worth playing each month. The games you get will be a mix of PSN (playstation network games, that are smaller and cheaper) and regular Playstation 3 games. Just don’t expect to get any new games, it feels like most games are a few years old, but that doesn’t bother me because it dosen’t effect the overall quality of the games that they’re old.
I got games I never ever would have bought myself, which is just fantastic, PS Plus let’s you explore the deep sea of Playstation 3 games that are out there. And you also get games that you want but you maybe wouldn’t go as far and buy it. Like Dead or Alive 5 for example, never ever would have bought that game, but now that I own it thanks to Playstation Plus I play it now and then and loving it, at least in small doses.
On the Playstation Blog you can find which games will be coming and going each month, worth checking out if you’re curious.
The other features of Playstation Plus
There’s a few other feature you get included in Playstation plus, here’s a overview of them:
Discounts on PS store, each month you get discounts on games in the PS store, I never used any of these discounts mainly because I think the PS Store is way to expensive, I guess if your lucky you could find a good deal on there with these discounts, but I rather buy games online then on the PS Store with or without a discount.
Automatic Software and game updates. In theory this is fantastic, but for me it hasn’t been that smooth. Playstation 3 is known for there long updates for both the games and the Playstation software itself. What this feature dose is that you can choose a time when the Playstation should turn itself on and update everything it can, game updates, the software and trophies.
The main problem for me is that you can’t choose to just auto update some games, it wants to update all the games you have and all the games you ever had. For example I had played some FIFA game on my Playstation a year ago or so, I don’t own that game anymore and I never play it, the PS auto updater still wanted to download a huge update for that game, pointless if you ask me. Also you can only choose to do a auto update daily, I would rather have it check for updates weekly, because updates doesn’t come THAT often.
Online storage of your saved games, I never used this feature so I can’t really review it, but I guess some people could see this useful, if you for example play on more then one Playstation 3, then you can take your saved games wherever you go.
Access to a bunch of demos and betas. This is yet another feature I haven’t been using, you can download a bunch of demos and get access to beta versions of games with Playstation Plus. Never really used it so I can’t review it. The PS Store if filled with demos already so I just don’t see the point.
Summary of my review
For me Playstation Plus has been worth it, during my 5 month subscription I would say I got around 4-5 games that has been really really good and fun, and also a hand full games that has been OK games that are worth playing but maybe not something I would go to the store and buy. The other features that you get with Playstation Plus isn’t that great, if you’re going to get Plus then get it for all the games and not for the features.
Don’t expect to get fantastic games each month, we all have different taste when it comes to gaming, so it’s only natural that some are going to be disappointed and some will be happy with the new games each month.
